Do you have painful, irritating, and gritty sensations in your eyes due to persistent dryness? You don’t have to tolerate the discomfort — consult our doctors at Austin Face & Body for effective and minimally-invasive dry eye management using cutting-edge techniques.

About Dry Eyes

Most people suffer from dry eyes occasionally. However, persistent dry eyes are symptomatic of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, a medical condition wherein the meibomian glands (responsible for mixing natural oils into your tears) are blocked. Without sufficient natural oils, your tears evaporate easily, failing to lubricate your eyes. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is a progressive condition with symptoms that worsen over time, necessitating quick intervention with minimally invasive treatments.

Dry Eye Treatment Options

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy is a common treatment option for chronic dry eyes and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. This groundbreaking treatment uses pulses of light to liquefy and release the oils clogging the meibomian glands, which, as mentioned previously, is responsible for effective eye lubrication. Besides unclogging the meibomian glands, the pulses of light also address the symptoms of chronic dry eyes, such as eyelid redness and inflammation.

During the IPL treatment, you have to wear eye shields to protect your eyes from the bright lights. The doctor applies cooling gel to the relevant treatment spots and administers the light pulses via the IPL device. The pulses of light liquify and unclog the meibomian glands, following which the doctor manually releases the trapped oils from the glands. Your eyelids can then continue lubricating your eyes, restoring optimal functionality.

Most patients notice considerable improvements in the eyes and vision after one or two sessions. However, you must complete the entire treatment plan, which usually includes four IPL sessions spaced one month apart. The treatment plan effectively addresses the root cause of chronic eyes, providing long-term relief. Depending on the severity of the problem, some patients may need maintenance treatments once in a while.

BroadBand Light (BBL)

BroadBand Light (BBL) treatment is suitable for moderate to severe eye dryness and ocular rosacea, a condition marked by the enlargement of blood vessels. The treatment shuts down the blood vessels leading to inflammation in the eyelids. The doctor also liquefies and expresses the hardened oils and secretions clogging the meibomian glands. Furthermore, BBL therapy minimizes the bacterial load and parasites in the eyelashes that may also contribute to MGD.

The BBL treatment is conducted ear-to-ear and not just on the lower lids. The treatment restores the optimal functioning of the eyelids by addressing all the potential root causes of MGD, making it a holistic and effective treatment for long-term relief. Most patients see marked improvements after the first session, but the entire treatment plan consists of 3 to 4 treatments over 4 months with maintenance sessions once or twice a year, depending on the doctor’s recommendations.
