Hair loss is a significant problem faced by millions of Americans. It can affect patients in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond, diminishing overall self-confidence and self-esteem. FUT is a traditional hair replacement technique, also known as the “strip method.” It utilizes a portion of the scalp rich with hair follicles from the back of the head to replenish areas that are thinning, balding, or shedding. It is ideal for patients, mostly women, who wear a longer hairstyle that will conceal the linear scar left behind after the procedure.

Key terms to understand:

  • FUT – Follicular Unit Transplantation
  • FU – Follicular Unit: a group of healthy hair follicles (a graft)
  • Strip – A portion of the scalp used for follicular transplantation
  • Linear harvesting – Using the donor strip to transplant healthy hairs to new areas
  • Donor site – The region from which the hair follicles are extracted
  • Recipient site – The region where the hair follicles are placed to combat thinning

What is FUT?

FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation. The technology was developed over 100 years ago to help restore healthy, vibrant locks and a more youthful appearance. Also called the “strip method”, FUT is often chosen for patients who have significant areas of balding, shedding, or thinning.

How is FUT performed?

During a FUT treatment at Hair of Austin at Austin Face & Body, a small portion of the scalp is taken from the back of the head, where the hair follicles are the most abundant. This strip provides thousands of donor follicles for transplantation. Once the new follicles are placed in areas of hair depletion, they begin growing naturally, restoring your hairline.

How does FUT compare to FUE?

In the capable hands of a proven, experienced provider, both FUT and FUE offer patients natural-looking, long-lasting results. The difference is in how the procedures are performed in terms of harvesting the donor follicles.

FUT comes with a longer recovery time, but it provides the maximum number of hair grafts in a single office visit. It is also a great option for those with longer hairstyles who will be able to conceal the linear scar. FUE may be more appropriate for those with short hair who are concerned about scarring after their procedure. Rest assured that our team can help guide you as you select the best approach for your needs and goals.

What can I expect after FUT?

Because the hair grows in cycles, patients may have to wait several months to begin seeing new growth patterns emerge. The hairs will continue to get thicker over 10 months’ time. The final outcome can be seen after one year. After 10 days, all scabbing should be complete. Sutures are removed within 10-14 days. There may be some minor discomfort in the donor areas at first, but this is well-managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Most patients can resume work and other normal activities within a few days.
