Male Breast Reduction

Many men struggle with the condition of gynecomastia, the growth of excess breast tissue. This can be an embarrassing condition for many men, and can have a negative impact on their self-esteem and quality of life. If you're seeking a procedure to remove your male breasts, Austin Face & Body can help.

A life-changing procedure

Many men who have male breasts are so embarrassed that they hide them. They cover up with shirts at the pool or beach, wear thicker clothing (sometimes even compression shirts), they change the way they sit or stand, and they avoid working out because they don't want to make their chest more apparent. Because of all this, gynecomastia surgery can be a life-changing experience. The procedure reduces male breast size, removing the “female breast” appearance by flattening and enhancing the chest in the correct areas.

Why do male breasts develop?

If you have male breasts, you may wonder what caused them to develop. The answer depends on whether your gynecomastia is a glandular issue or a weight issue—and sometimes, it can be both. The known causes of male breast development include:

  • Biogenetics
  • Medication
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Obesity
  • Anabolic steroid use
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Klinefelter’s syndrome

What is the procedure like?

Gynecomastia surgery will improve your condition whether it’s a glandular condition or due to weight. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes under two hours to complete.

Dr. Linville will make a very small incision on the underside of the areola, where the areola and the chest meet. Liposuction will be performed through this incision to remove the fat. Dr. Linville will then remove the tissue and re-shape the chest, transforming it from feminine-looking breasts to a masculine chest.

Recovery

After your gynecomastia surgery, you will be given a vest with foam underneath it that you will need to wear for two days, after which you can stop wearing the foam and just wear the vest. You may remove it to shower after 48 hours, but then put it back on. Patients typically wear the vest (around the house) for about a month.

During recovery, patients should expect to feel sore in their chest, but pain is very tolerable and can be managed with medication if needed. Most patients return to work in a week, if not a bit sooner, as long as their work is not physically demanding. Exercise should be avoided for about three weeks.

Am I a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

If your male breasts are bothering you and having a negative impact on your self-esteem and life, you may be a great candidate for the procedure. The ideal candidate:

  • Is a generally healthy male with excess breast tissue
  • Is emotionally distressed due to the size and shape of his breasts
  • Should have realistic expectations about what the surgery can achieve
