What Is Breast Augmentation?

Interesting Facts About Breast Augmentation

  • FDA Approval of Silicone Gel Implants: Silicone gel breast implants received FDA approval in November 2006, following the requirement for companies to demonstrate their safety. Advances in technology and research have continued to enhance the safety profile of silicone implants.
  • Bacteria and Saline Implants: Although rare, reports indicate that fungi can potentially survive in saline-filled implants, leading to infections. This risk can be minimized through proper care and vigilant post-operative management.
  • Individualized Approach to Breast Augmentation: Breast augmentation is personalized to each individual, considering factors like implant choice, incision placement, and surgical method to achieve the best results that match the patient's body and aesthetic desires.
  • Significant Role in Enhancing Self-Esteem and Overall Wellness: Under the expertise of a skilled surgeon, breast augmentation has the potential to greatly enhance self-confidence and promote overall emotional wellness. Educating patients about potential risks and collaborating closely with experienced medical professionals can help minimize complications and ensure positive post-operative results.
  • Designed to Last for Many Years: While breast implants are durable and long-lasting, the outer shell may weaken over time, increasing the risk of rupture. Regular follow-up appointments with a plastic surgeon are essential to monitor implant integrity and address any emerging issues promptly.
  • Safety and Breastfeeding with Implants: Saline and silicone implants are typically regarded as safe for breastfeeding, although specific situations like breast reconstruction post-mastectomy can influence breastfeeding capabilities. Ongoing advancements in implant technology and surgical practices aim to enhance safety and outcomes for women who choose to breastfeed after augmentation.

Breast Augmentation Patient Testimonial

My experience with Austin Face & Body was incredible from start to finish. I was not blessed in the breast area and knew I wanted a change. When I met with Dr. Schneider for my consultation, his nurse and him immediately made me feel comfortable and welcomed. He was so knowledgeable, honest and professional. I left confident knowing he would be my surgeon and booked shortly afterwards! The surgery and recovery process were far better than I imagined. Recovery has been so simple. I even went shopping the same day :) All of the random questions I had post-op I thought would drive him crazy, but Dr. Schneider was always quick to respond and answer all of them. He is a true magician, and I cannot recommend him enough. My decision to get breast augmentation surgery was one of the best personal decisions I have ever made. I have never been happier with the way my body looks! Thank you, Dr. Schneider!

Incisions for Breast Augmentation

Dr. Chris Schneider and Dr. Alex Pong, who both perform breast augmentation at Austin Face & Body, favor the inframammary incision along the breast crease for a variety of aesthetic and medical reasons. At our practice, over 90% of breast enhancement procedures are performed using this approach. Incisions placed in the armpit or those encircling the nipple tend to increase the rate of complications, and both doctors feel that these choices can also result in less precise placement of the implants. If you have questions regarding your breast augmentation incisions, speak with your provider during your private consultation to learn more.

How long can I expect my breast augmentation results to last?

How long do I need to sleep on my back after breast augmentation?

Sleeping on your back after breast augmentation is an essential part of the overall healing process. You will need to maintain this new sleeping position for at least six to eight weeks. Stomach sleeping during this time is not safe, as it places unnecessary pressure on your implants.

Can I still breastfeed after getting implants?

Most women are able to safely breastfeed with implants. Breast implants are placed between the chest wall and breast, and they don’t interfere with the breast ducts or mammary glands, which is where milk is excreted from. Some glandular tissue may be removed, but generally, enough is left to enable milk production after surgery.

Do I need to replace my breast implants?

The FDA recommends replacing silicone and saline breast implants every ten years. The reasoning behind this recommendation is the longer implants are in place, the higher the risk of a complication, such as deflation or rupture.

Can breast augmentation reduce the appearance of sagging skin?

Breast augmentation can improve the size, shape, and projection of your breasts – but it generally can’t help with sagging breast tissue. In these cases, a breast lift may be recommended to restore a perky and elevated chest.

Are there any risks or possible complications with breast augmentation?

While breast augmentation is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. These may include infection, changes in nipple sensation, and implant rupture. It's essential to discuss these factors thoroughly with your surgeon to make an informed decision.

What steps can I take to minimize scarring after breast augmentation surgery?

To minimize scarring after breast augmentation surgery, follow your surgeon's postoperative care instructions carefully, including proper wound care and avoiding activities that could strain the incision sites. Additionally, consider using scar-reducing treatments recommended by your surgeon, such as silicone gel or sheets.

Will I experience pain after breast augmentation?

Discomfort is common post-surgery, but pain can be effectively managed with medications and attentive post-operative care. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions on how to alleviate discomfort during your recovery period.

How long can I expect my breast augmentation results to last?

The duration of your breast augmentation results varies depending on factors such as your lifestyle, aging process, and changes in weight. Many patients maintain long-lasting results with proper care and regular follow-up appointments.
