Ultrasonic, or piezoelectric, rhinoplasty uses a device that emits high-speed sound waves to tiny cutting and shaving tip inserts. These inserts can precisely shave, smooth, and reduce the nasal bones. This system has been used in oral surgery for many years and has recently been approved as a rhinoplasty system in Europe and the United States.

The procedure: What to expect

Your ultrasonic rhinoplasty will be done under general anesthesia and should take two to three hours to complete. To begin, we will create an incision along the columella – which is the strip of narrow tissue that separates your nostrils. This is referred to as an “open approach,” and is necessary with the ultrasonic procedure because direct visualization of the bones is required.

Once the incision is made, we will lift the nasal skin to expose the entire nasal bone structure underneath. We will then apply the ultrasound wand using varying tips to remove a nasal hump, create precise bone cuts that preserve the mucosa, and polish rough surfaces to refine the nasal bridge.

Recovery

After ultrasonic rhinoplasty, we will place a nasal splint to support the bones. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and ice the area regularly during the initial healing period.

The splint will be removed about one week later, at which point you should see minimal bruising and swelling, thanks to the gentle nature of this approach. Any subtle swelling will subside over time, and your results will be considered final within one year.
