Rhinoplasty is surgery that changes the shape or appearance of your nose, improves breathing, or both. Male rhinoplasty at Austin Face & Body can help you achieve a more traditionally masculine look by enhancing or adjusting specific nasal features. When planning rhinoplasty, Dr. Guy will consider your other facial features, the skin on your nose, and what you would like to change about your nose. The general goal of male rhinoplasty is to achieve a more traditionally masculine profile by adjusting the features of your nose.

What is male rhinoplasty?

One of the main concerns men have when they want to improve the appearance of their nose is whether rhinoplasty will make it look more traditionally feminine. An experienced rhinoplasty surgeon understands that cosmetic goals in a nose-reshaping procedure between males and females may vary.

Male rhinoplasty aims to improve the appearance of the nose and correct internal deformities while maintaining naturally masculine contours and a more robust nasal profile.

Some of the criteria achieved by male rhinoplasty include:

  • A straighter and wider dorsal portion or bridge of the nose
  • Less concaved than the bridge of a traditionally female nose
  • More bulbous and broader nasal tip in a neutral position which should not be turned up or significantly rotated

Because nasal skin in men is thicker than in women, one of the primary reasons why male rhinoplasty changes may be limited. It is essential to consult with your surgeon and keep realistic expectations of what changes rhinoplasty can make to your face.

What are the benefits?

Male rhinoplasty at Austin Face & Body can address and adjust the following characteristics:

  • Nose size and shape
  • Nose bridge width
  • Nostril size and position
  • Removal of visible bumps or depressions
  • Removal or alteration of a large or drooping nasal tip
  • Unevenness in nose structure
  • Altered size and balance in overall facial composition

Whether your goal is more symmetry, a size reduction, or even smoothing out the nasal slope, a male rhinoplasty can improve the symmetry, balance, and overall look of your face. In addition to aesthetic concerns, a rhinoplasty procedure can help correct several medical problems associated with the nose, such as remedying blocked airways within your nose to improve nasal breathing. A deviated septum can be corrected by better aligning the nasal pathways. These corrections have helped dramatically enhance breathing while improving multiple areas of daily life, such as sleeping, athletic activities, and exercise.

Am I a good candidate?

Ideal candidates for male rhinoplasty are in good general health, do not smoke, and understand what a rhinoplasty can accomplish for their aesthetic goals. We recommend that patients are older than 16 to ensure that the nose has completed growing. Each patient will have a different reason for choosing to undergo a rhinoplasty. While some have wanted to change their nose since childhood, for others, it may be a more recent consideration because their nose has been broken or has begun to change with age. No matter your reason, we will customize your male rhinoplasty in Austin to address your specific concerns and aesthetic goals.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

At Austin Face and Body, rhinoplasty requires general anesthesia so that you are comfortable and relaxed during your surgery. Rhinoplasty will be done through a small incision at the base of your nose, between your nostrils. Dr. Guy will readjust the bone and cartilage underneath your skin through this incision.

Dr. Guy will change the shape of your nasal bones or cartilage depending on how much needs to be removed or added and your nose’s natural structure. If the septum is crooked, known as a deviated septum, this will be corrected at the time of the rhinoplasty to improve nasal breathing. Splints may be placed in the nose at the end of surgery if the septal deviation was severe. Patients go home the day of surgery, no hospital stay is required.

Recovery

Rhinoplasty recovery can take up to two weeks but plan for four weeks of healing time before any social event. Stitches and a cast are removed one week after surgery, and swelling will decrease significantly after two weeks. Swelling will continue to fade over the next several months and will be fully resolved in one year.

To minimize swelling as much as possible, keep your head elevated and use cold packs frequently during the first week after surgery. If you want to reduce swelling and bruising, arnica and bromelain may give you visible results.
