Buccal Fat Removal or Reduction

Chipmunk cheeks may be cute when you’re a kid, but many individuals want a more sculpted facial appearance as they become older. Buccal fat refers to the extra fat on either side of the face in the lower cheeks. Excess buccal fat may result in a “baby face” or immature appearance for some patients, while for others it might look perfectly complimenting.

If you fall into the first category or you simply feel that your face looks less mature, or a bit younger or rounder than you’d like it to, it’s quite likely that overly large buccal fat pads are contributing to that appearance and that buccal fat removal or reduction could be a great procedure for you.

Buccal fat reduction is a simple procedure that decreases this fat in the lower cheeks, giving you a subtlety more sculpted and mature appearance.

Benefits of Buccal Fat Removal

Facial contouring with no scars

Patients love buccal fat reduction surgery because they can achieve natural-looking facial contouring with no scars and minimal downtime. Small incisions are made through the mouth and the portion of the buccal fat pad residing in the cheek is completely removed. This particular fat does not grow back regardless of weight fluctuations. The result is long-lasting lower facial contouring and no more “baby face.”

Am I a candidate for buccal fat reduction?

Do you feel like you have chipmunk cheeks or a “baby face”? Are you looking for a minimal downtime procedure that gives natural-looking and long-lasting results? A buccal fat reduction may be the right procedure for you. For further improvements in the lower face, buccal fat reduction can be combined with Botox, fillers, and other surgical procedures. Your anatomy and aesthetic goals will determine your options. Ask us which combination is right for you. Even without adjunct procedures, buccal fat removal on its own will produce noticeably complementary results and aesthetic improvements.

What is buccal fat reduction surgery like?

A buccal fat reduction is a procedure performed in the office that takes less than an hour. Incisions are made through the inside of the mouth so no scars are visible. The sutures used to close the small incision will naturally and quickly dissolve. Buccal fat pad removal can be done as a facial contouring procedure or in combination with non-surgical facial contouring. We have surgeons who are experts in facial contouring both non-surgical and surgical.

Recovery and results

After a buccal fat reduction, you will have small incisions on the inside of each cheek. These incisions heal very quickly and the stitches generally dissolve after 1 to 2 weeks. You will have some facial swelling and need to be on a soft diet for about a week. The swelling will continue to dissipate over time and final results can be appreciated about 6 weeks after the procedure.
